Jen Persson founded defenddigitalme in 2015, to campaign for safe, fair and transparent pupil data in the education sector in England.

She has advocated for the safe handling of the National Pupil Database, advocated for transparency on Home Office use of pupil data, and campaigned against the 2016 school census expansion to collect Nationality and Country of Birth, and against the expansion of the Alternative Provision Census in 2018. Jen leads on policy on data protection and privacy issues, as well as children’s rights online.

Jen is an independent member of the Department for Education National Pupil Database Steering Group and on the Advisory Council of the Foundation of Information Policy Research.

Prior to this she worked at an academic institute in open knowledge and digital services. She spent nearly ten years employed in global, commercial, data and business process projects.
